In this episode of BaerTalk, Jason Stanley, Jacob Urowsky Professor of Philosophy at Yale University, discusses his controversial book, How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them. Prof. Stanley is a prominent public intellectual who generates a fair bit of energetic criticism. Even when I don’t agree with him, I appreciate the sincerity with which Jason approaches debate and wish that all academics who choose to engage politics would be as honest and open.
I ask Prof. Stanley to explain how he arrives at his definition of fascism. We debate whether or not settling on the definition of fascism is really necessary to understand anti-liberal politics. We also discuss the nature of liberal democracy and the best way to defend it against its enemies.
